Scope BLN Berlin Germany
Claudia Dinep was awarded an Artist - In - Residency in Berlin Germany and partnered with Belgian landscape architect, Joe Ingenito, to re-imagine a courtyard for a mixed-use high-rise residential/gallery/performance space in the center of the rich cultural neighborhood of Moabit.
Their first collaboration, Joe and Claudia saw an opportunity to team up to re-imagine their separate studio practices and work together within a more conceptual space. Residencies typically exclude landscape architects for various reasons such as project timeline logistics or the complexity of the collaborative process, however the flexibility of the curator and founders of SCOPE BLN who developed the brief and schedule made this opportunity possible for both firms.
The vision for the design phase was to engage the Moabit community in a charrette event that would help flavor the courtyard design ideas. The existing space, dominant with paving, trash bins and bike storage - would it be a space to create in, dance, dine, daydream, have a drink with friends or be alone with a book? Ultimately this became a space to spend the seasons in.
Kick-off began with a site visit, community meeting and presentation where key pre-design questions meant to discern the interests of the current resident community were asked. What are your priorities? Security? Privacy? Community? Green Space? Many residents participated and the key desires for the re-design were indisputable: Green Space and Gathering Space. Furnished with ENZI seating from the Museumsquartier in Vienna, the space was completed in 2022.
