Wetland Garden West Hartford Connecticut USA
Wetlands are dynamic places. Exhibiting extreme water-level changes with each weather-event both sustains and applies pressure on the plant life within them. This1000 square foot low-lying ephemerally saturated area was historically maintained as lawn and inundated via ground water as well as runoff from surrounding areas. Because they acts as sponges in the landscape, wetland soils and their associated plant communities function to retain and cleanse stormwater, keeping surrounding areas drier, reducing downstream flooding and creating key pockets of wildlife habitat. A critical tool for stormwater management, restoring wetland vegetation is also an opportunity to employ a rich, exciting native plant palette.
